Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip Review

Sports games have always been popular on PlayStation Portable and we’ve seen many sports games on this console, but this time there’s something for the fans of tennis. Although this game isn’t a tennis simulation it will provide you with hours of fun. Of course, I’m talking about Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip. If you don’t know we’ve already seen Hot Shots Tennis on PlayStation 2 and it’s the spin-off of the famous Hot Shots Golf Series. Now after the PlayStation 2 version of Hot Shots Tennis we got a PlayStation Portable version that is called Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip, so let’s see what this version has to offer to the fans of the series.

If you don’t know Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is not a series tennis simulation but it’s interesting and a fun game that will keep you occupied for hours. The best thing about Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is that it’s simple and that you’ll be able to master its controls in a few minutes. Controls are simple and all that you have to do is to move your character towards the ball and when a ball is within your range you need to press certain face button for the different type of shot. Speaking of shots there are several shots that you can perform such as lob, slice and topspin shot. On the other hand, serving is simple as well and all that you need to do in order to serve a ball is to press a certain button to toss the ball and press another button again to hit it. As I said before, it’s simple as it can get and it will take you few minutes to learn most of the moves in this game. Of course, those are just the basics and if you want to become a pro you’ll have to work on your timing and angles. Speaking of timing you’ll know that you’ve hit a ball too early or too late with a certain image next to your head. If you hit the ball too soon you’ll get a rabbit picture and if you hit it too late you’ll get a turtle picture, and if you manage to get your timing right and hit the ball at the right time you’ll get a note next to your head. As you see, there’s a certain complexity in this game and if you want to become a pro you’ll have to work on your timing.

One thing that makes this game amazing is the level of customization that it has. If you play the Story Mode you’ll get access to new accessories such as clothes and hair, but you’ll also get new moves and rackets by defeating other people in Story Mode. Speaking of Story Mode it includes the open world in which you need to travel and get members for your tennis team. Of course getting the members of your team isn’t always easy so you’ll have to do certain tasks before you get a chance to challenge them. Don’t worry, these tasks include tennis mostly on several different courts. There are many courts available in a game and you can discover them all by challenging all players that you meet. By challenging other players you’ll unlock special accessories, courts and characters as well so there’s a good reason to go back to those previous zones that you’ve already cleared. As for the members of your team, each has its stats and loyalty meter that increases if you play as that character. The more loyalty you have from certain members more unique perks you’ll unlock for those characters. In addition, more loyalty means more stats boosts so you should really work on those as much as you can.

As for the multiplayer game uses ad-hoc mode that has support for four players. This means that you can play double matches with your friends in multiplayer and in story mode. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t support online mode so you’re limited only to the ad-hoc.

Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is a great tennis game, it has simple but great looking cartoony graphics and a lot of customization options. The sound is great and controls are easy to learn and master. Only problem with this game might be the lack of online multiplayer and Story Mode can get boring from time to time especially if you’re not a fan of tennis. If you’re not a fan of tennis you’ll probably be easily bored with Story Mode but if you enjoy simple game of tennis make sure that you check this great game out.
